Why Men Never Get Published in Dear Abby
Dear Abby,
I’ve never written to you before, but I really need your advice on what could be a crucial decision. I’ve suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me.
The usual signs… Phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up.
My wife has been going out with the girls a lot recently although when I ask their names she always says, “Just some friends from work, you don’t know them.”
I always stay awake to look out for her taxi coming home, but she always walks down the drive. Although I can hear a car driving off, as if she has gotten out of the car round the corner. Why? Maybe she wasn’t in a taxi?
I once picked her cell phone up just to see what time it was and she went berserk and screamed that I should never touch her phone again and why was I checking up on her.
Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn’t want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really check on her.
I decided I was going to park my Harley Davidson motorcycle next to the garage and then hide behind it so I could get a good view of the whole street when she came home. It was at that moment, crouching behind my Harley, that I noticed that the valve covers on my engine seemed to be leaking a little oil.Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it back to the dealer?
Sincerely,
Jilted
Great Doormat

Who's the Environmentalist?
HOUSE # 1:

A 20-room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house all heated by gas. In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy than the average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2,400.00 per month. In natural gas alone (which last time we checked was a fossil fuel), this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. Oh -- and this house is not in a northern or Midwestern "snow belt," either -- it's in the South.
HOUSE # 2:

Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university, this house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction can provide. The house contains only 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on a high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F.) heats the house in winter and cools it in summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes 25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Flowers and shrubs native to the area blend the property into the surrounding rural landscape.
HOUSE #1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of Nashville,Tennessee. It is the abode of that renowned environmentalist (and filmmaker) Al Gore.
HOUSE #2 (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas, also known as "the Texas White House," it is the private residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

I had heard of underground coal mine fires before but have never seen one up close or in video. Here's a post from some people who went through Centralia, Pennsylvania last year and took a lot of pictures. The entire town was completely evacuated and has been a ghost town since 1962. Spooky!

Never Be First or Last in a Real Estate Deal
From ChongQing (formerly known as Chung King) comes this story of a diehard who decided to hold out and be the last man standing in a new real estate development. You never want to be the guy who is approached first when a new project is being assembled. But you sure as hell REALLY don't want to be the last guy out either. Especially when you're asking for an astronomical sum for your little piece of earth. As reported in the local paper Sou Fun.

Living Wills
Living Wills: Be careful to say what you mean.
While watching the SuperBowl last weekend, my wife and I got into a conversation about life and death and the need for living wills.
During the course of the conversation I told her that I "...never want to exist in a vegetative state, dependent on electronic machines and taking fluids from a bottle.."
She got up, unplugged the TV and threw out all my beer.

Real Home Remedies that Work
Amazingly Simple Home Remedies
1. If you're choking on an ice cube, don't panic. Simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat and presto - the blockage will be removed almost instantly.
2. Clumsy? Avoid cutting yourself while slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold them while you chop away.
3. You can avoid arguments with the Missus about lifting the toilet seat just by using the sink.
4. For high blood pressure sufferers - simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Always remember to use an egg timer.
5. A mousetrap placed on top of your alarm clock will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.
6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives. Then you'll be afraid to cough.
7. Have a bad toothache? Smash your thumb with a hammer and you'll forget all about the toothache.
8. Sometimes, we just need to remember what the rules of life really are. In life, you only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move but should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move but does, use the duct tape.
9. Remember: Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
10. Never pass up an opportunity to go to the bathroom.
11. Some people are like Slinkies: They're not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

The Cowboy Boots
(Anyone who has ever dressed a child will love this one!)Did you hear about the Texas teacher who was helping one of her kindergarten students put on his cowboy boots?
He asked for help and she could see why. Even with her pulling and him pushing, the little boots still didn't want to go on. By the time they got the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat.
She almost cried when the little boy said, "Teacher, they're on the wrong feet."
She looked, and sure enough, they were. It wasn't any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the right feet.
He then announced, "These aren't my boots."
She bit her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, "Why didn't you say so?" like she wanted to. Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet.
No sooner had they gotten the boots off when he said, "They're my brother's boots. My Mom made me wear 'em."
Now she didn't know if she should laugh or cry. But she managed to muster up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots back on his feet again.
Helping him into his coat, she asked, "Now, where are your mittens?"
He said, "I stuffed 'em in the toes of my boots."
She will be eligible for parole in three years.

What Does Color Blindness Look Like?
I was surprised when I first learned that color blindness doesn't actually mean you can't see certain colors. Color blind people might see the colors very differently or very similarly depending on their condition. Vischeck is a website that has some interesting information as well as clear examples on the variations of color blindness. They also have a special page that applies an algorithm to images to help people with color blindness to "see" the colors they're missing. All of this reminds me of the first time I'd encountered someone with color blindness. I was in my early 20's and had gone into business with a friend of mine. One part of our shop was devoted to t-shirts with customized artwork and slogans that could be ironed on to order. Greg was the tall, funny kid who lived across the street from my house and we'd hired him to be our delivery driver. But after days of pestering us to work the front counter, we finally relented and let him work up front one morning when he didn't have any deliveries. About five minutes later, Greg comes running back to my desk in the back, whispering, "Hey Robert -- Could you help me out up front with a customer?"
As we headed up to the counter, I asked him, "What's the problem? This guy giving you a hard time, Greg?" To which he muttered back, "I'm colorblind. I can't tell which t-shirts are red!" After helping him take care of the customer, I think we all ended up spending an hour or two asking him all sorts of questions about his condition; when did he first find out, what's it like, what does he see... Being artists, my partner and I were completely fascinated. Oh -- and we ended up tagging the shelves of t-shirts so that the colors were marked on labels so Greg could help out at the front counter.
In the end, do we really know who actually sees normally and who sees differently?

When It Comes Time to Say Hasta la Vista, Baby!
One of the editors at PC World took it upon himself to join a whole bunch of different online services and groups just to see what it would take to cancel them later. Sadly, most of the results aren't all too surprising. The worst offenders were the ones which made it next-to-impossible for the average user to find out how to cancel their service or subscription.I'm personally surprised to see that EarthLink (my ISP for many years) is only listed as SOME Hassle rather than BIG Hassle but I guess some of the others might be even worse (if you can imagine that!). One of the main reasons I'm still with EarthLink is that they owe me so much money right now that the only way to get it all back is to continue with their service at a ridiculously low monthly fee so they can pay me back over time (they claim they can't refund more than 60 days to any account -- what's up with THAT?!!!).
Anyway, link to the article is HERE. Check out the complete list.

"Sadness." said the student.
"And the opposite of depression?" he asked of the young lady from the University of South Carolina.
"Elation."
"And you sir," he said to the young man from Clemson University, "how about the opposite of woe?"
The Clemson Tiger replied, "Sir, I believe that would be giddy-up."

People Who Can't See Faces
I remember seeing a short feature during a TV news show on this interesting condition: the inability of a very rare segment of our population to distinguish faces. Face Blindness. I can't imagine not being able to recognize or remember anyone's face. Not even your own in some cases. Studies were scarce since mental health professionals seldom ran across sufficient numbers to conduct a study. But among the many paradigm shifts that happened when the Internet came along, people with this condition finally found a forum to communicate with each other and the rest of the world. So much more has been learned about what the experience is like from reading all the recent posts and blogs about Face Blindness. A good place to start is Bill Choisser's Face Blindness (Prosopagnosia) Pages HERE.
