Malfunction Junctions

A 19-year old driver went off the Bellevue Way exit on I-90 this past Saturday night. I mean, REALLY went off the exit. Another driver who witnessed the airborne accident had called it in but police and highway patrol looked for the car and couldn't find it. 12 hours later, the car was spotted in the water 50 feet below the ramp and the dead driver was pulled from the wreckage. (Seattle Times article HERE.)

What I didn't know was that there's a name for traffic engineering nightmares: Malfunction Junctions. In fact, Wikipedia actually has a listing of some of the worst in the US complete with Google aerial views. Then I came across another blog posting for some of the wackiest ones from around the world HERE. So here's to traffic engineers everywhere: What were they thinking of?
