Yes, you heard it right: Pictograms. In an effort to emphasize the unique features of Chinese culture and language as they prepare to host the 2008 Olympics, China has officially posted the official symbols that will be used for each of the different athletic events. I hope the designer(s) are rewarded for such an original and elegant design approach.
The written Chinese language has evolved over the centuries from its original pictograms but nevertheless adheres to a complex process of pictorial symbols. I have always been fascinated with how the written Chinese language differs so completely with the alphanumeric languages of the West.
And yes -- with so much buzz being generated for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, I'm seriously thinking of heading over just for the experience of being there.
