Mr. Lee's Cat Cam

Check out a day's worth of the images from the Cat Cam (can also be used as a spouse cam!) at Mr. Lee Projects for Cats and Pets (no relation).

So Much for Blowing Up a Building the Old Way

I still remember when they imploded the old Kingdome Stadium in March 2000. We had front row seats downtown at The Harbor Club and witnessed the perfectly-timed demolition of Seattle's old Mariners' Stadium to make room for the new Safeco Stadium. Although it went down perfectly, it still left a lot of dust and debris all over the downtown area for months.

I was just reading about a new approach to demolition in Japan: They take it out one floor at a time... starting from the bottom up!

Incredible to watch and you can read more about it HERE on Freshome.com.

Paul Allen's Brain Map Project

When you live in the Seattle area, you can't help but pick up on the general love-hate relationship people have with Bill Gates and Paul Allen. From the success-envious wealth redistribution fanatics to the most passionate lifelong Microsoft geeks, most everyone has something to say about two of the richest men in the world. Of the two men, Paul Allen remains the more enigmatic and that's what probably leads to some of the undeserved ill-will so often directed at him.

Few people outside of the tech community will remember that Paul Allen dropped out of Microsoft at an early point when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease in 1983, enduring radiation therapy and a bone marrow transplant to finally recover from his near-fatal illness. But he never returned to Microsoft full-time, opting instead to follow his own pursuits backed by the wealth generated from his massive Microsoft stock holdings.

Seattle has benefited from a lot of Paul Allen's good fortune including The Experience Music Project and The Science Fiction Museum. But I think among his most enduring contributions will come from his generous support of numerous research projects. His most recent project was just announced to great fanfare: The Allen Institute for Brain Science has been mapping out the mouse brain and spinal cord in unprecedented detail and is finally up online for free public access. This remarkable research is his first step in the ongoing study of the human brain (they're working on that now).

Even after all these years, I still remain in awe at the growing base of knowledge and how it continues to be easier to find online. And yes, I like Paul Allen.

Latest Jib-Jab Political Cartoon

Like 'em or hate 'em, JibJab has been producing some of the best animated political parodies for a few years now. They always manage to poke fun at everyone without being too nasty. Hmm - bipartisan comedy. What an original concept!

Best Mug Shot T-shirts

I'm sure most of you have already seen the story about the idiot who got busted setting up a hookup with what he hoped was a 14-year old girl. If you're going to do stupid stuff like that, at least think about what you're going to wear when you get there! (Kinda like your Mom telling you to wear clean underwear in case you get in an accident and have to go to the hospital.) His mug shot became one of the most popular news images a few days ago.

So The Smoking Gun posted up a collection of other t-shirt mug shots that might top that one.

The Evil Version of Highlights Magazine

How many of you are old enough to remember Highlights for Children Magazine from school? Or your dentist's office? Those pre-Sesame Street "educational publications" were full of connect-the-dots drawings and vanilla stories guaranteed not to offend Mom. The folks over at Holy Taco took some time to re-make a nasty version for those us who endured pages and pages of that old classic. Check it out HERE.

Church Ladies with Typewriters.

Thank God for those church ladies with typewriters.

The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals.

The sermon this morning: "Jesus Walks on the Water." The sermon tonight: "Searching for Jesus."

Our youth basketball team is back in action Wednesday at 8 PM in the recreation hall. Come out and watch us kill Christ the King.

Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands.

The peacemaking meeting scheduled for today has been canceled due to a conflict.

Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say "Hell" to someone who doesn't care much about you.

Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help.

Miss Charlene Mason sang "I will not pass this way again," giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.

For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs.

Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get.

The Rector will preach his farewell message, after which the choir will sing: "Break Forth Into Joy."

Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.

A t the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be "What Is Hell?" Come early and listen to our choir practice.

Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones.

Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.

Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered.

The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility.

Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to follow.

The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.

This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin.

Ladies' Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 AM. All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B.S. is done.

The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday.

Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door.

The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.

Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church Please use the large double door at the side entrance.

The Associate Minister unveiled the church's new tithing campaign slogan last Sunday: "I Upped My Pledge - Up Yours."

My New Diet

I didn't write this, but it definitely sounds like something I WOULD do. The next time someone asks you a dumb question, wouldn't you like to respond like this:

Yesterday I was buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for Athena, my wonder dog, at Wal-Mart and was in the checkout line. A woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had - an elephant? So since I like to stir the pot, I told her that no, I didn't have a dog and that I was starting the Purina Diet again.

I probably shouldn't, I continued, because I'd ended up in the hospital last time. I awoke in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. However, I did lose 40 pounds on the diet, so I was giving it another go.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is you load your pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete and I needed to lose a few more pounds.

(I have to mention here that by now practically everyone in the line was enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, this woman asked if I ended up in intensive care because I'd been poisoned by the dog food. I told her no, it happened because I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter's ass and a car hit both of us.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack, he was laughing so hard!

WAL-MART won't let me shop there anymore.

A Fine, Fun Music Video

Directly from the PCL Linkdump site, I quote:

"Way back the old days, before I was a contributor to this blog, (I remember that I used to picture Sebastian and P-E and Ange all in a room blogging away - like , y'know, PCL Central or something) I would send Sebastian my latest video, and generally he would post it, because of his excellent taste, mostly, and that encouraged me to stick with my own blog, GlyphJockey for 2 and a half years now. But now I work here too, so I'm gonna take a chance and post my latest work (2 minutes long, so don't worry): "GLAD" I hope you like it. If not, simply don't send in your monthly payment.

It's been a while since I've put together one of my vignette videos based on concepts that hit me......

I drive a 12 year old Pontiac convertible to my place of work, so I get quite the panoramic view. I was waiting for the light to change across from a storage complex, when I noticed how the end of Cream's "Glad" matched so beautifully with the tube man on top of the storage complex's roof as he waved his pneumatic arms and whipped his pneumatic head back in an unbridled expression of glee and air-filled pride.

I phonecammed a test with the stereo blasting, and then I knew I had to do it....."

Pathetic Sign of Where Divorce is Headed?

From a story on Local6 News in Orlando, Florida I'm sure the unintended consequence of this woman's actions are that a lot of men will know enough to stay away from her, saving them all a lot of time, grief and money.

A New York woman involved in a divorce battle spilled secrets about her husband, his family and their intimate life in a "scary, new step" in user generated content, attorneys said.

Tricia Walsh-Smith can be watched on YouTube lashing out at her husband, Broadway executive Philip Smith, in a teary and furious clip that has been viewed more than 150,000 times.

Local 6 reported that lawyers can't think of another case like Smith's and are calling it a "scary, new step."

Read the rest of the pathetic story HERE.

Tax Day 2008

A re-take on an oldie-but-goodie:

DEAR INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE,

Enclosed you will find my 2007 tax return showing that I owe $3,407.00 in taxes.

Please note the attached article from the USA Today newspaper; dated 12 November, wherein you will see the Pentagon (Department of Defense) is paying $171.50 per hammer and NASA has paid $600.00 per toilet seat.

I am enclosing four (4) toilet seats (valued @ $2,400) and six (6) hammers (valued @ $1,029), which I secured at Home Depot, bringing my total remittance to $3,429.00.

Please apply the overpayment of $22.00 to the "Presidential Election Fund," as noted on my return.

You can do this inexpensively by sending them one (1) 1.5" Phillips Head screw (see aforementioned article from USA Today newspaper detailing how H.U.D. pays $22.00 each for 1.5" Phillips Head Screws).

One screw is enclosed for your convenience.

It has been a pleasure to pay my tax bill this year, and I look forward to paying it again next year.

Sincerely,

A Satisfied Taxpayer

The Real Footage from Hillary's Bosnia Visit!

Generation Y

In its January 22, 2008 edition, the Quebec City newspaper Le Soleil had a topic about generations by age group.

Generations are grouped as follows:

- The Silent generation, people born before 1945.

- The Baby Boomers, people born between 1945 and 1961

- Generation X, people born between 1962 and 1976

- Generation Y, people born between 1977 and ?

For the last one, one can ask why "Y"?

French-Canadian Cartoonist Marc Beaudet explains it eloquently below:

Help America - Spend Your Rebate Wisely

The federal government is sending each and every one of us a $600 rebate. If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China. If we spend it on gasoline, it will go to the Arabs or Venezuela. If we purchase a computer it will go to India. If we purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala. If we purchase a good car it will go to Japan. If we purchase useless crap, it will go to Taiwan and none of it will help the American economy.

The only way to keep that money here at home is to buy prostitutes and beer, since these are the only products still produced in the US. Thank you for your help.

Signed,
(Ex) Governor Spitzer

Virtual Orgasm Simulator

How Traffic Jams Happen

Driving around in Seattle, I often wonder why traffic backs up for no reason whatsoever. You're driving along in a nice flow of traffic checkin' out some tunes and suddenly things just grind to a painful crawl. And then you creep along for the next mile or two, waiting to come up on some blood-curdling traffic accident that just has to be up ahead somewhere. But nothing ever shows up and just as quickly as the jam started, traffic speeds up again just as quickly as it slowed down.

So what's the deal? Is there some psychological effect going on here or what? Well, our friends at the Mathematical Society of Traffic Flow in Japan (great name!) have created a simulation to show you how it happens. So what can people do to un-jam themselves in a traffic jam? NewScientist has a more extensive article on the study HERE.

George Carlin on Who Controls America

...or the Dumbing of America.

I still love the guy. First time I got to see him was in Toronto at the O'Keefe Centre in the late 60's right after he came up with the 7 Dirtiest Words in the English Language. He was actually forewarned by the Toronto Police Dept. NOT to perform that piece so he didn't. Sort of. As he finished his show, he took off his sweatshirt to reveal a black t-shirt. He turned around to exit the stage and the 7 dirtiest words were printed in bold white letters on the back of his t-shirt. Great exit I'll never forget!

Things That are Hard to Say When Drunk

THINGS THAT ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO SAY WHEN DRUNK:

1. Specificity

2. Anti-constitutionalistically

3. Passive-aggressive disorder

4. Transubstantiate

THINGS THAT ARE DOWNRIGHT IMPOSSIBLE TO SAY WHEN DRUNK:

1. No thanks, I'm married.

2. Nope, no more booze for me!

3. Sorry, but you're not really my type.

4. Taco Bell ? No thanks, I'm not hungry.

5. Good evening, officer. Isn't it lovely out tonight?

6. Oh, I couldn't! No one wants to hear me sing karaoke.

7. I'm not interested in fighting you.

8. Thank you, but I won't make any attempt to dance, I have no coordination. I'd hate to look like a fool!

9. Where is the nearest bathroom? I refuse to pee in this parking lot or on the side of the road.

10. I must be going home now, as I have to work in the morning.
