Power of Numbers

This site is absolutely the most impressive way I've ever seen to impress the impact of numbers in a dramatically visual way.

This example is an enlargement from the piece Plastic Bottles (2007) which "depicts two million plastic beverage bottles, the number used in the US every five minutes."

Latawnya, The Naughty Horse

So this librarian discovers an obscure "children's" book on the shelf while cleaning out the old stuff (referred to as "weeding" in librarian circles BTW). You have to read the book online HERE to completely appreciate it. I kind of doubt this made it any award-winning acclaim.

Snow White's Apology

Tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. Disney will hold a press conference to apologize for the Seven Dwarfs singing "Hi Ho, Hi Ho" in the story, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Current plans are to remove from sale all items associated with this racist epic including books, dolls, apparel and
movies.

Later in the week the Seven Dwarfs will appear on the Al Sharpton radio show to make individual apologies and undergo several hours of groveling.

Jesse Jackson has not been contacted for comment. His office stated that he and his personal secretary were attending a meeting in the Bahamas. His people at PUSH hinted that a large protest is being scheduled at Disney World.

Snow White couldn't be reached for comment but later, she and Jesse are meeting privately to discuss the matter.

Earlier in the week, Blackbeard was fired and escorted off the premises for uttering his trademark, "Ho, ho, ho and a bottle of rum.

So Much for Copyright Promises in China

Bloggers everywhere have been posting links and images of this 'It's NOT a rip-off of DisneyWorld' children's theme park in China. Unbelievably blantant thievery on a level like I've never seen. Oh -- and that's not Minnie Mouse with Donald duck in the picture; it's a cat with big round ears, according to the park's owners.

An incredibly cute clip from an upcoming feature from Robbie Williams' Rudebox. The kid's a natural!

Phuc Vu Thong Dich!

Well-intended signs can make for interesting reading. Especially when you're sitting around in the hospital Emergency waiting room for hours. I took my daughter in to Vancouver General yesterday afternoon to get checked for signs of meningitis after she kept getting sicker and sicker all week long. After clearing over an hour of bureaucratic waiting, form-filling and more waiting, they finally moved us into the "registered patient waiting area" -- to wait some more before she finally got assigned to an examination room.

Well, you can only read so many health brochures and magazines so you start looking around for something -- anything -- else to read. This sign went completely unnoticed until I pointed it out and suddenly everyone in the waiting room noticed it. Sometimes, English translation can create interesting reading (This one's for you, Thach!)...

Ant Nests

Yep. Ant nests. This dude over at Florida State University either loves to study how ants live or he just likes pouring Plaster of Paris into ant hills. Either way, the results are simply incredible after he unearths the dried plaster molds of the ant nests. Here's a link to the article and the attached pics from the Journal of Insect Science.

The Most Innovative Consumer Product I've Seen in Years

Every once in a while, I run into a consumer product that just hits the Now-Why-Didn't-I-Think-of-That category. Here's one so obvious that you just gotta slap your forehead: Magnetic Clothes Hangers. All the older solutions were linear -- literally. Closet rods hold clothes hangers in a straight line. As designed by Daniel.

An Oldie But Goodie: The Husband Store

A brand new store has just opened in London that sells Husbands. When women go to choose a husband, they have to follow the instructions at the entrance:

"You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are 6 floors and the value of the products increase as you ascend the flights. You may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you CANNOT go back down except to exit the building!"

So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband.

On the 1st floor the sign on the door reads: Floor 1 - These men have jobs.

The 2nd floor sign reads: Floor 2 - These men Have Jobs and Love Kids.

The 3rd floor sign reads: Floor 3 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids and are extremely good looking.

"Wow," she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going.

She goes to the 4th floor and the sign reads: Floor 4 -These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Good Looking and Help with Housework.

"Oh, mercy me!" she exclaims, "I can hardly stand it!"

Still, she goes to the 5th floor and sign reads: Floor 5 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Gorgeous, help with Housework and Have A Strong Romantic Streak.

She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the 6th floor and the sign reads: Floor 6 - You are visitor 31,456,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store.

To avoid gender bias charges, the store's owner opens a New Wives Store just across the street.

Why Men Never Get Published in Dear Abby

Dear Abby,

I’ve never written to you before, but I really need your advice on what could be a crucial decision. I’ve suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me.

The usual signs… Phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up.

My wife has been going out with the girls a lot recently although when I ask their names she always says, “Just some friends from work, you don’t know them.”

I always stay awake to look out for her taxi coming home, but she always walks down the drive. Although I can hear a car driving off, as if she has gotten out of the car round the corner. Why? Maybe she wasn’t in a taxi?

I once picked her cell phone up just to see what time it was and she went berserk and screamed that I should never touch her phone again and why was I checking up on her.

Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn’t want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really check on her.

I decided I was going to park my Harley Davidson motorcycle next to the garage and then hide behind it so I could get a good view of the whole street when she came home. It was at that moment, crouching behind my Harley, that I noticed that the valve covers on my engine seemed to be leaking a little oil.

Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it back to the dealer?

Sincerely,
Jilted

Great Doormat

Who's the Environmentalist?

Look over the descriptions of the following two houses and see if you can tell which house belongs to an environmentalist:

HOUSE # 1:

A 20-room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house all heated by gas. In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy than the average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2,400.00 per month. In natural gas alone (which last time we checked was a fossil fuel), this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. Oh -- and this house is not in a northern or Midwestern "snow belt," either -- it's in the South.

HOUSE # 2:

Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university, this house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction can provide. The house contains only 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on a high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F.) heats the house in winter and cools it in summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes 25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Flowers and shrubs native to the area blend the property into the surrounding rural landscape.

HOUSE #1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of Nashville,Tennessee. It is the abode of that renowned environmentalist (and filmmaker) Al Gore.

HOUSE #2 (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas, also known as "the Texas White House," it is the private residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

Malfunction Junctions

A 19-year old driver went off the Bellevue Way exit on I-90 this past Saturday night. I mean, REALLY went off the exit. Another driver who witnessed the airborne accident had called it in but police and highway patrol looked for the car and couldn't find it. 12 hours later, the car was spotted in the water 50 feet below the ramp and the dead driver was pulled from the wreckage. (Seattle Times article HERE.)

What I didn't know was that there's a name for traffic engineering nightmares: Malfunction Junctions. In fact, Wikipedia actually has a listing of some of the worst in the US complete with Google aerial views. Then I came across another blog posting for some of the wackiest ones from around the world HERE. So here's to traffic engineers everywhere: What were they thinking of?

Real Home Remedies that Work

Are you tired of all those ridiculous lists of home remedies people keep forwarding in their e-mails? Well, here's a collection that really works so you can send something back to all the people who have been so helpful.

Amazingly Simple Home Remedies

1. If you're choking on an ice cube, don't panic. Simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat and presto - the blockage will be removed almost instantly.

2. Clumsy? Avoid cutting yourself while slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold them while you chop away.

3. You can avoid arguments with the Missus about lifting the toilet seat just by using the sink.

4. For high blood pressure sufferers - simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Always remember to use an egg timer.

5. A mousetrap placed on top of your alarm clock will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.

6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives. Then you'll be afraid to cough.

7. Have a bad toothache? Smash your thumb with a hammer and you'll forget all about the toothache.

8. Sometimes, we just need to remember what the rules of life really are. In life, you only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move but should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move but does, use the duct tape.

9. Remember: Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

10. Never pass up an opportunity to go to the bathroom.

11. Some people are like Slinkies: They're not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.
